Twitter! Tomorrow I go on maternity leave, which means leaving you all behind until November. My only posts will be pre-scheduled promo, so mute if it bugs you. Meanwhile, enjoy this photo of my cat in a baby hat.

She is right, is a damn good sensitivity reader. I owe her for a lot of great advice, not just on how to be respectful but how to be natural with the language surrounding Rena's disability.

When in reality it takes time to build a career and an audience, and you can always improve your craft through practice. So in your debut year, enjoy the moment. Enjoy all the moments. You'll have time to freak out about career trajectory later, trust me.

And because of the way the conversation has been structured around Debuts and Greats, we assume we have to be one or the other, or that's it for us. So we spend a lot of debut year panicking about whether we're Great enough or whether we're now irrelevant.

I spent a lot of time in debut year freaking out about the future, instead of celebrating the fulfillment of a lifelong dream.

I guess some consolation on is that no one hates my work more than me when I find unintentional weird repetition.

Having a book out when the bookshops are shut and publicity tours aren't an option (except via zoom) is tough. Lockdowns favour big names over smaller or newer authors. But here are some amazing things you can do to help authors ride this out...

The worst novel ever written is still better than the best novel never written. So keep going on that first draft even if you hate it ❤️
