According to @nytimes style, alt-right is to be described as a racist, far-right fringe group. So, you’re saying pieces like this are the gateway to white people becoming white supremacists? That’s your hot take?https://twitter.com/bariweiss/status/991688062475390976 …

First: When that label is used promiscuously, people start to take it less seriously. And we should be taking the actual alt right seriously.
-
Second: When conservatives, classical liberals or libertarians are told by the progressive chattering class that they--or those they read--are alt-right, the very common response is to say: Screw it. They think everyone is alt-right. And then those people move further right.

I’m very confused about how using the term alt-right “promiscuously” has anything to do with your tweet about articles turning white people into open white supremacists.

i agree the distinction should be made, but saying articles like this push people into the alt-right robs them of their autonomy and critical thinking. it's like blaming the left for trump instead of ya know, the trump voters

@SamHarrisOrg just called Ezra Klein a member of the "far left." Spencer would certainly agree. So maybe it's Harris who should take caution.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

You know what's actually a gateway drug to the alt-right? Promoting the idea that black people are congenitally less intelligent than white people, and blatantly lying that a bill outlawing advocating genocide against transgender people would result in jail for misgendering.
-
As far as I'm aware, no one is "promoting" ideas, but rather, observing scientific data. You should be aware that data doesn't care about your political stance, it's ambivalent. Also, Canadian law you're referring to is designed specifically for what you're claiming

Are there distinctions? Harris is anti feminist, men’s movement writer who thinks Murray’s racist ‘blacks are inferior intellectually’ theories have merit. He’s a better writer - is that what you’re refering to?
-
It's a distinction without a difference.
