I didn’t get admission to the full-time program of a top university I attended part-time in 2014. I appealed and still no luck. Was at a conference in 2019 and the prof I appealed to was asking my advisor for tips on recruiting students like me.

Well, I am glad you are in our program, Tutu!

This is encouraging to hear as a junior looking into applying to grad programs next year. Any advice?
-
My broad advice would be to try to somehow stand out. There are a number of ways to do it and anyone can do it; you just have to put in the effort. Engage in research already, learn a useful skill, form thoughtful connections with prospective advisors, etc.

Looking back, would you have admitted yourself?
-
Great question! Hard to know, as I was not a conventional candidate and could easily fly under the radar. My degree was in EE; I had work experience but no research experience

whenever I search my email for messages from my department’s grad coordinator, the first one when sorted chronologically is my rejection from Cornell CS in 2009
