If someone tries to convince you that bananas and sugar cane are really viable commercial crops in Wales, to support the idea of a self-sufficient Britain... ...it’s time to wonder what exactly is being taught about farming and food in U.K. schools.https://twitter.com/Barb_Drummond/status/1224058622944120837 …
No. Look to #Netherlands for great market gardening. Lots more varieties of fruit, veg, pulses etc.

One of the least calorifically self sufficient countries on earth?

James I’m sorry but. We don’t get taught ANYTHING about farming in schools. I have no idea why some things would and some things wouldn’t work in certain places.

They grow them in heated greenhouses with growth lamps. Maybe even CO2 added to the air inside.

We are facing global warming. Until 1340s England had a major export trade in wine.

We are in a different Netherlands. There is considerably less selection in the supermarket here than I am used to in .UK. I find it hard to find good potatoes, and when I do I have to buy lots and waste a lot. And it's all plastic wrapped.

Why go to the supermarket. Go to the open market. Lots of different kinds of vegetables, potatoes and fruit. No plastic if you bring your own shopping bag.
