Chapter 5: Start.
It was startlingly, really. To feel herself get yanked away from the campfire by herself as opposed to seeing the rest of Hello, Happy World going through the exact same thing.

When the world quiets temporarily, she decides to move. Staying around here won’t do her any good: moving is the only way to find someone.

There’s a brief moment of deliberation before Kaoru reaches a decision: to twirl and see where the fates lead her.

With a few spins, Kaoru comes to a halt and opens her eyes. “Ah... west it is,” she mumbles, fidgeting with her flashlight and heading in that direction.

A light comes to life followed by mechanical whirring as she gets closer. Kaoru clenches the flashlight, fully prepared to blind whatever is coming.

Kaoru blinks and stares for a moment. A mix of a relief and anxiety comes over her and, if not for the immediate steeling of her nerves, she may have fallen.

“Maya...? Ah, to see you eases my heart, and yet...” It’s clear what Kaoru wants to say, leading Maya to only shake her head. “Chisato-san got your text and we came to find you. I think she was pretty worried.”

It takes a moment for Kaoru to remember what Maya is talking about. One hand rests over her heart at the memory, fingers digging into the fabric of her shirt. Had she not sent that text, then...

“K - Kaoru-san, it’s okay! We’re... doing okay! You don’t have to cry—“ Kaoru hiccups, having not even realized she had started crying. Arms come up to swipe away the tears, letting out a small sniffle. “M... My apologies, I... became overwhelmed for a moment.”

Maya stares for a moment before looking away. Kaoru can’t help the embarrassment that bubbles in her chest. Chisato... where is she? Is she doing okay? “W... Well, we must get moving. You’ve done a wonderful job getting a generator on already.”

There’s a twinkle of pride in the drummer’s eye. It’s a feeling she ought to have more; all the things she’s done for productions and her band (probably) should be recognized.

Gushing about her fellow drama club member isn’t the point. Especially when the revving of a chainsaw is much closer than she wants.

The man comes bursting from the grass, charging with the weapon in the air and a roar off his lips.

It’s clear his target is Maya, Kaoru’s face paling as the seconds tick down until impact.

Kaoru beams the killer with the light, causing him to yell in anger and veer a bit off course. Maya moves, only feeling a slight knick off her shoulder as the chainsaw is buried in the generator.

Kaoru inhales, running behind the killer’s back and grabbing Maya’s hand. The slight injury goes unnoticed as she drags the brunette forward and they take off in the opposite direction.

When the coast is clear enough, the girls collapse behind a broken down tractor. Kaoru keeps a hand on Maya’s, a small source of comfort in this moment.

Maya stiffens, looking back over her shoulder at where the voice came from. “Aoba-san...!” she whispers. “It is I... Moca-chan,” she answers, far too comfortable with her spot on the floor of the tractor’s front seats.

Kaoru only stares. Somehow... that looks uncomfortable. How is Moca laying on her back like that? Wild. “... This guy isn’t really smart, huh? He chased me for a while but lost me and hasn’t found me since.”

“... Aoba-san, why are you laying on the floor though?” Kaoru asks, having shifted to form a circle. Moca hums and looks back before returning her attention back. “Oh. Well...”

tw: a bit graphic Moca grunts as she carefully shifts. She straightens her leg out, but the sight is clear enough. There’s an indent where her kneecap ought to be. Blood soaks a wide area around it, still fresh enough that the scent makes Maya and Kaoru gag.

“Sorry. I can’t really walk anymore,” she mumbles, gazing upon her destroyed knee. Kaoru turns away to inhale, shakily breathing out after. “... I’ll carry you. You shouldn’t be too heavy, right?”

Moca blinks before a smirk comes on her lips. “Huhu... am I a princess now? Guess so... that’s okay. I’ll allow it once.” Kaoru isn’t sure how to respond to that and simply (awkwardly) pulls Moca into her arms and cradles her.
