Wing Commander II came at the very end of the SNES’s life cycle. Lower than expected sales of the system for Christmas 94 doomed the release. Many do not know it was ever developed, especially since it was (confusingly) to be the THIRD Wing Commander game for the SNES.

The
@wccic has a standing bounty for a working copy (a rom will do). If you have any information on the game you can contact us at news@wcnews.com (... or if you just want to geek out about Wing Commander.)Show this thread

Any idea for which countries the release was planned initially? Was it a localized version and did they male any changes for the SNES release compared to other releases?
-
It would’ve been a US-only release, although it was sent to Pony Canyon in Japan for duplication. The US marketing side of FCI also shipped out review copies, which was the last time it was seen.
-
It does have a partner game, Ultima Savage Empire for the SNES. Savage Empire was converted by the same team and was promoted alongside WC2 in the US... but was ultimately only released in Japan.
-
The game itself would’ve been very different from the WC2 we know, they had to heavily adapt it for the system. Just from the available magazine screens we see reworked cockpits and dialogue!

Definitely finished but never published? Man there has to be some dev out there that has one sitting around in a box somewhere...pleeeease :)
-
Yes! We’ve confirmed it was signed off at Origin and even had review copies sent to press... they killed it at the very last minute.

Man! I feel your passion! I’ve been a diehard Origin fan since I first played Ultima 1 back in the early 80s. I love the history in games, and this is serious history. I’ll do some digging in the bits of free time I have and PM you if I find anything. Hopefully it’s a new lead :)

That’s very kind, thank you very much! (And I’m happy to geek out about Origin with you any time!)

Did it use mode 7?

FCI was supposed to publish it. Do they have it?
-
I’ve reached out but haven’t had much luck. I’ve exhausted my contacts at Origin but have found it hard to figure who is who once it reaches Japan for certification/marketing/duplication.

Had the SNES port of Wing Commander I. It was not good. It used the Mode7 for zooming ship sprites ... which meant that only one enemy ship was ever in combat range. It made the game very easy, though. :D Oh, and no story cutscene gfx, just a planet with text. :D
-
That’s right! The WC1 port was done by Mindscape... WC2 was done in house at Origin by the guys who would go on to do Wing Commander Prophecy for the PC starting from scratch. I really want to know how they managed it!

Maybe it was canceled, cos it was a poor port? I think SNES ports if WC are bad,but any way i would like to check it out as retro fan!
-
That’s possible, the original WC SNES port from Mindscape was rough. But the lost WC2 started from the ground up and was done at Origin... I’m eager to see how it would have worked!
