(Seriously tho, this sparks an interesting line of thought for me as a baptist: How do Presbyterians et al move from an inherently gendered sign of the covenant to a non-gendered one? Has someone written on this? Is this Gal 3:28?)
-
I’ve yet to see one offer a rationale other than “see this shows how the covenant sign expands to more people so baptize your babies.” As a Baptist, I’d say it’s because each member of the New Covenant is given the Spirit as individuals, not made members by patrilineal descent.
-
I'd honestly never thought of the gender angle before now, which is saying something. But seriously, this deserves some more thought.
-
You won't be surprised, Hannah, to hear that Alastair has written about this some place, but I can't seem to find it at the moment.
-
I'll have to look. Was just tweeting the Q out. As a baptist, I've never had to wrestle w/ it.

Now this is a *very* theological explanation. Any thoughts as to why baptism is extended to male & female under the new covenant & beards & cigars are not?
