Twitter is now the supreme force in Western civilization. It edits both Trump and the Times. Neither the president of the United States of America nor the publisher of the New York Times can write whatever they want if Twitter doesn't like it.https://www.thedailybeast.com/new-york-times-publisher-ag-sulzberger-laments-loss-of-a-talent-like-james-bennet …

People say that the West today has no goals, no metrics, no sense of purpose by which to measure itself. Nonsense! The purpose of every politician, journalist, and intellectual is clearly to amass likes on Twitter. By extension this is now the purpose of Western civilization.

Twitter sets up powerful incentives for American leaders and by extension for America itself. Popularity can be measured by likes. Truth can't be. Status is a zero-sum game. Wealth creation isn't. There are many good things about Twitter, but it wasn't built to be a government.

Twitter is the supreme court of public opinion. It is thus the actual government of the United States of America. Politicians feel they can canvas their constituents by putting out a tweet and seeing what sticks.

Once we realize that Twitter is our actual government now, whatever might be written on paper, we can start thinking about how we might improve on that. Can we build social networks with physical levels of civility & rule-of-law if this is a first class goal from the beginning?

Politicians used to hire teams of pollsters to do what Twitter does for them in real time.

It's plausible that the general opinion on Twitter predicts what the country will eventually do. To prove your point, you need to show that the general opinion in barbershops and pubs is a worse predictor.

Yeah, if Twitter's backend was an open state database, we could create some interesting plots to show whether it exhibits Granger causality with respect to shifts in public opinion. See here for some thoughts on open state backends:https://twitter.com/balajis/status/1198655461232463874 …

Block explorers like http://btc.com  and http://blockchain.info  are currently the best examples of value added frontends built on open state backends. But the concept is far broader and addresses many of today’s concerns with centralized internet platforms. https://twitter.com/balajis/status/1123092897664880640 …

would’ve been more awesome if Twitter can solve the bot problem. #digitalidentity is the killer feature of the next generation of social media apps 🔥😷
