Folks, when we say NYT is a competitor to tech companies we aren’t kidding. They’re literally offering ad targeting services. A direct competitor is not a neutral arbiter. “The Times will begin to offer clients 45 new proprietary first-party audience segments to target ads.” https://twitter.com/antoniogm/status/1262757541710139392 …

Imagine the NY Knicks & SF Warriors playing a game with the Knicks declaring themselves referee. I get why NY would advocate for this setup, but SF would be foolish to go for it. If you’re in tech always remember: media corporations are not referees, they are your competitors.

Another way of putting this is that the NYT has just finished pivoting into *becoming* a tech company.

Well good, Google needs more competition. Every big publisher should do this

That may look backward from another standpoint. The media that carries the ad to the reader is best suited to offer access to that reader. Always was before tech inserted itself in the chain. More powerful publishers are taking back control. Can't blame them.

How are we supposed to have neutral arbiters in this ad driven business model? Have you seen @inkl ?

This is typical for most scaled up publishers to do using a DMP. If anything, @nytimes is a bit behind the times on this.

Would sincerely like to see you write more about this. The decentralized model has obvious flaw here: no incentive to be a countervailing power. Yes, competitor incentives aren't ideal either. But checks and balances need some source of power.

Hmm NYT’s reporting on Australian and French regulators targeting Facebook and Google definitely didn’t seem neutral. Maybe this has been a long time coming.

I'm frankly not too worried. These dinosaurs honestly believe that their "expertise" will more accurately sort their market of readers by interest than a Neural Net. They're obsolete and fooled by their own bs and will starve because of it.
