There's one point Kelsey makes that I do disagree with: did public health officials not raise the alarm? Many in Asia & WHO *did* raise alarm. See this thread from Jan 31. Yet media virus denial would continue for weeks. With devastating consequences.https://twitter.com/balajis/status/1223088081777065985 …

I struggle to understand why people in the USA thought it wouldn"t go down just like it did in China.....

Herding happens. Gotta hug your benchmark lest you get fired. No upside for being a hero, tons of downside if you're wrong. Just like asset management.

For the longest time they argued that masks weren’t necessary and didn’t help. From what we’re seeing in Europe v Asia, I’d disagree

I’ve been thinking about this a lot tonight. If
@KelseyTuoc was saying one thing to family and another thing to the public, what kind of conversations are people@CDCgov and other government roles having with their own families behind closed doors? Makes you wonder. -
^ major respect re-earned by
@KelseyTuoc for owning up to it, though (I couldn’t squeeze this into the last tweet, but it belongs up there in flashing neon lights.@KelseyTuoc was brave enough to tell the truth. We need people like her more than ever these days)

Media cos are incentivized to hire people who tell the public what they (the majority) want to hear, and who have the same biases. An accurate, scary sounding report might have gotten way less clicks. (Not defending media here, but imo this is an underestimated factor)
