As an investor, you’re surely familiar with people underestimating the significance of exponents...

Yes. And as a scientist :) The Quarantiner’s Dilemma is very similar to the Innovator’s Dilemma.

Can someone explain the urge to downplay
#coronavrius with these numerically illiterate comparisons? I don’t get it. It’s perfectly rational to be concerned about something growing exponentially. What’s motivating this? -
1) It’s hard to figure out how much to worry about something that’s unknown and 2) Nobody wants a global panic. 1 + 2 = excessive downplaying.

Corporate media telling us NOT to panic — for once — should be suspicious.

They do not want their shareholders to panic. In the coming months we are going to see who has a solid backup plan for things like supply chain and who's backup backup plan is mostly just blowing glitter in shareholders faces.

Honest Q - at a high level, what is driving the greater level of fear for coronavirus vs flu, given that the latter has killed more this year? Is it the newness of the virus combined with fears that it may mutate? Or is there a higher mortality rate for those infected?
-
Exponential growth combined w/ far higher mortality.

In what sense is comparing something to the flu trivializing it?
-
~0.3% mortality rate vs ~3%(current estimate). And the unknown vitality of
#2019nCoV.
