  1. Many generations of Lakota have used the Curly Cup Gum Weed to treat poison ivy. They use the sticky sap on the outside of the plant and rub it onto the afflicted area for relief. These are home remedies that work!

  2. In the 1930s and 1940s a draft horse was taken to the top of Cedar Butte to help log the older, large cedar trees. The only trails to the top are game trails and they are hard to negotiate for humans today.

  3. Cedar Butte in the South Unit is a location where the Eastern Cedar meets the Western Juniper? More fascinating is these plants can cross pollinate and produce viable offspring since the Eastern Cedar is actually a type of juniper.

  13. Did you know there are seashells in South Dakota? 65 million years ago, South Dakota was under an inland sea, meaning you can find fossil clams, ammonites, and other sea creatures in the park! If you find a fossil, LEAVE IT WHERE IT IS!

  16. Due to weather concerns, the Discover Badlands event scheduled for Wednesday, June 20, 2018 has been cancelled. Watch Facebook for updates once the event has been rescheduled.

  17. Badlands will share stories of parks within a day’s drive during National Park Week. Each day a different park film will be featured at 1pm in the Visitor Center.

  18. Blizzard conditions on Friday will impact park operations. Heavy snow and strong winds expected. Whiteouts will make travel dangerous to impossible.
