In my latest ⁦⁩ article, I analyzed over 7,000 URLs performing in Google Discover to see what drives performance there. I found the results pretty surprising, maybe even a little controversial 😏 Check it out!

I really like this analysis from showing how to use data to analyse a change in content performance. It shows how with a bit of patience, a methodical approach & some good data, anyone can take a deep dive into market changes. —>

Plus XML sitemaps serve additional purposes, such as indexing-analysis. Cloudflare's 'Crawler Hints' may throw a spanner into that particular use case.

This is interesting on multiple levels. Using XML sitemaps to feed crawlers a personalised list of changed URLs sounds great in theory, but in practice sitemaps are not treated as gospel by crawlers. Plus the <priority> attribute is noisy and mostly ignored.

The whole report is worth reading, and the Powerpoint deck linked from Ofcom's page is a fantastic summary of the key points:

This is great in theory. In practice, you can do everything right and still not get any reward in Google.

For my latest newsletter, I've written down some thoughts on Google's deeply flawed algorithmic news inclusion process:

That’s been a consistent tactic from Google for years: make webmasters implement tags/code that reduce Google’s indexing & ranking efforts. As an industry we’ve been happy to go along with this, seduced by lures of ranking rewards. I’m starting to wonder if that was a mistake…
