Seems really bad that mainstream culture has heavily stigmatized companies having lots of data on people. Imagine if big companies were viewed as prosocial for sharing anonymized datasets. Would steer tons of questions we ask in science and also let us get quick answers.
I think the outrage at being bad custodians is justified. Not the outrage at data existing and people analyzing it. I think the subtext of most data related outcries is that people just don't want tech companies to have data, period.
