I would say it’s well-justified in that time and time again companies have been shown to be careless with user data. How a company may actually protect data is not well publicized. Also matters how data is analyzed/anonymized, in some cases the data can be trivially de-anonymized
I think the outrage at being bad custodians is justified. Not the outrage at data existing and people analyzing it. I think the subtext of most data related outcries is that people just don't want tech companies to have data, period.
