In this case, the simulated responses to this tweet are pointing out that HN commenters are toxic I agree that many HN comments are negative or not productive. Even if half the simulated comments are strawmen, that can still shape your presentation in a constructive way.

I'm not sure how well these techniques generalize to others, but I find that they work really well for me. If I had to speculate, I'd bet our brains our brains are better at simulating how others will behave than systematically pulling up facts in isolation.
