Ethereum dApps will probably move to users signing blobs of data using private keys that don't actually hold any funds. dApp operators will submit txs including these signatures, proving the end user gave the 👍. Lets business pay for gas, deal with nonces, retry TXs, etc.

Attached screenshot is a concrete example for those that know a little bit of solidity. Basically, why does a user of a social network need to submit a TX saying they accept a friend request? Just use the private key to prove you accept and let the biz submit the TX for you.pic.twitter.com/8E9UGJc3I5

Any further reading or Docs to understand how this works in Solidity a bit more? This is really useful to a project I’m currently working on, wasn’t aware of the possibility.

        Look into ecrecover and ECRecovery (https://github.com/OpenZeppelin/zeppelin-solidity/blob/master/contracts/ECRecovery.sol …). In JS land, use web3-utils's soliditySha3 https://www.npmjs.com/package/web3-utils … and ethereumjs-util ecsign https://git.io/vxDV0

Agreed. Also needed to decrease user risk. E.g. for games. Should be able store ERC721 tokens safely in cold(ish) storage, sign a transaction to link to your hot address with no funds, then play the game in safety.

Yup 100% agree. That is part of the motivation for why we are working on this for @Bloom

@backus @Bloom -- Is the WIP code for this feature open source? I was also considering working on a general-purpose solution for it.

so would funds be secured via another payment protocol (BTC or a USD pegged equivalent)? And ETH would act as more of a protocol used to create legally binding contracts or to facilitate agreements between parties?

I think he’s saying fund transfers will still happen in Ethereum but many transactions require no funds transfer but would still require the user to own ETH to pay gas. This lets nonfunds related use cases to happen without the user owning any ETH at all. Solves cold start prob

Same thought here. 2 months ago I developed a login library for my website and realise we need to have separate keyring with 0 funds for signing only. It’s possible to have an EIP for this? I’m happy to test and work on reference implementation. Hope @danfinlay can give some idea

There is already an EIP for this called “account abstraction”, but there are a couple ways (posted here already) that it can also be somewhat achieved in-protocol.

Thanks I did a bit of digging and found a few EIPs. Now I have standard fatigue.

Hope so, because MetaMask popping out for every little thing is a real UX no-go for many use cases, especially many small actions per session. Isn't a coming update integrating an EIP about contracts paying for gas? Should be a good first step.

Interesting idea! You could use the Private Keys as a login mechanism, and not charge users or the business for transactions per se, but instead do it as a SaaS product and charge a monthly fee, which on average covers the expenses for GAS for all users of dApp.
