Elephant in the Brain is a great book. I’ve followed evolutionary psych, behavioral econ, & individual @robinhanson args about signaling for years. He and @KevinSimler do a great job weaving the topics together into a powerful narrative. Signaling goes way deeper than I thought!

I really like the its argument for self-deception being evolutionarily advantageous. Basically, unconscious brain walls off one set of beliefs from conscious mind. Conscious mind hold diff beliefs with 100% conviction. Useful for convincing others without seeming conflicted.

Examples: - Startup founder convinced they will succeed is more persuasive. Healthy skepticism would comes thru in communication and behavior as uncertainty. - Person willing to die for a cause seems serious! Doesn't mean they don't have self-preservation instinct.
