I love how Uber's massive datasets are fueling economic research. Male Uber drivers earn 7% more per hour. "The Gender Earnings Gap in the Gig Economy: Evidence from over a Million Rideshare Drivers" https://web.stanford.edu/~diamondr/UberPayGap.pdf …pic.twitter.com/DT3CIv5Fkf

"A driver with more than 2,500 lifetime trips completed earns 14% more per hour than a driver who has completed fewer than 100 trips in her time on the platform, in part because she learn where to drive, when to drive, and how to strategically cancel and accept trips."

tl;dr: • Men drive a bit faster. This accounts for ~50% of gap • Men stay on platform longer and learn from experience. ~30% of gap • Men drive in more profitable locations. ~20% of gap

Implications of these advantages are interesting. I imagine that improvements to the app that educate new drivers + driver features that help people get to the right places at the right time might help close the gap. Doubt Uber is going to tell people to drive faster though.

Men drive more hours and respond to fuel efficiency incentive accordingly. Women: 25.32 miles/gallon Men: 26.85 miles/gallon 6.4% more miles per gallon. "Controlling for gasoline costs would likely increase the gender pay gap."

According to the paper, what is the ostensible reason for why women 'don't learn from experience'?

They do, but the longer they are an Uber driver the more likely they are to stop driving or drive less (compared to men), from what I understand.

Yeah, in interview with Hall (one of the authors): > We estimate that men and women learn identically quickly in trips. So a man or a woman in the data who have done the same number of trips will have accumulated the same amount of learning.

Regarding the first point, Uber's pricing is designed to promote speeding, by paying drivers much more for mileage than time. There isn't a good reason to pay drivers 2-3x their marginal cost per mile. I wrote about it. @felixsalmon noticed Uber's pricing is weird too.

on the profitable locations point, i wonder is there any additional data re gender skew during peak drunk demand hours.
