If you are using an in-browser Ethereum wallet (e.g. Metamask, Brave, Parity) then any website can detect if you are an Ethereum user. I wouldn't be surprised if some advertisers are already collecting this information.
I haven’t checked this but if you’re right and you never manually enabled, then I would guess one of the early versions enabled it by default and that setting got grandfathered into your updates.

Yeah I tried installing the very first release (0.19.53) where Metamask was introduced and it was disabled by default. Don't see any changes that standout when git spelunking.
