Result is you can write custom validations and dry-v will still know how to short circuit, extract your values to validate, etc.

ActiveModel seems similar but custom validators just blindly call methods on the object.

If you need to validate X with ActiveModel and it depends on the value of Y you're basically going to have to check if Y is valid again.
