I have a theory: The people that feign surprise ("You JUST learned about X?") are more often other 20-somethings looking to differentiate themselves as more in the know than others their age. Older members tend to either let newbies be or they appreciate a good resurfacing.

To be clear too, I view myself as doing this (I'm reminded of it all the time when I share classics). Sar, @devonzuegel, and @sonyaellenmann come to mind too. Many others that I don't know quite as well and won't risk tagging 
following young people is pretty good imo. their lives & minds are less structured, so they're more likely to "waste time" finding cool things and blabbing about it with less of a filter. sometimes the re-treading of obvious ideas/experiences is eye-rolling, but mostly endearing
Well said and appropriate scare quotes for "waste time." Adding on, I think you can view re-treading both as: • Required training so new generation can level up • Smoothing function for group, resurfacing "best of" in case others missed it
Occasionally there's also novel integration of re-treaded ideas. (Hard to cohere X and Y when they unfolded, but retrospectively the connection is clear..)

And remember, often we WON'T have heard of it before. You're a practitioner? But maybe some of us are amateurs in this field of knowledge or ideas. You've rediscovered some cultural artifact that every 40 year old from your country has seen? But I'm not from your country. Etc...
Doesn't always have to be 20 year olds. Maybe they just joined 6 months ago and just tries to soak up and read all they can. 
Been studying for 3 years. Only recently Twitter. Discovered there are amazing discussions that I don't want to miss.
