At some point in 2006, someone at Facebook must have been like > Here's an idea. When two people break up, what if we put "John and Jane broke up" on everyone's feed with a comment section so their friends can weigh in? and then they shipped it and it's STILL a thing in 2018.

I've been trying to play with my perspective on the history of Facebook so I can appreciate how things were controversial in the early days. My friend @ctbeiser (currently deactivated 🙄) emphasized how weird this decision was and it's my favorite so far.

Absurd how random decisions like this became part of social infrastructure over time

Exactly. I think reflecting on tech history and finding a way to latch on to the absurdist frame of it all is a great way to internalize how arbitrary many aspects of modern life are

Was just discussing this with @rsnous the other day. As he put it: The iPhone team experimented with different keyboard styles and Steve Jobs was just like, no we’re sticking with QWERTY. May have missed out on a keyboard revolution

This sounds fun for friends but kinda humiliating for the couple. Pretty sure Facebook would have got a lot of flak for this thing😅😂

In Facebook HQ in London there are these "funny" posters of dev/designer talk like "I'm going to put something there". All I could think of when I was there that they should also have one that says "No one will notice".
