Saying that reading a white paper takes several hours doesn't even do it justice. The level of focus you have to sustain through the reading is also quite strenuous. It's worth it sometimes, but it usually isn't pleasant. I usually don't feel this way about academic papers, btw.

I've been arguing this privately to a lot of people somewhat recently, partially because people will share their white paper before a meeting and then want advice. Either everyone else is way faster at reading this stuff or people are skimming then giving advice which is sketchy

Not really, it's just all modern crypto projects. Just imagine you got introduced to someone and they asked you to read the IPFS white paper (https://ipfs.io/ipfs/QmR7GSQM93Cx5eAg6a6yRzNde1FQv7uL6X1o4k7zrJa3LX/ipfs.draft3.pdf …) before you get coffee or something.

to be fair you can skip reading most of a large number of whitepapers when you recognize they're basically hot air with no hints on how to actually build the technology they purport is revolutionary
