Sci-Fi story I'd love to read: "Rapid human evolution" invented. New species of humans emerges in 2020, evolved for modern world 👇 (Cross post from Mastodon: https://refactorcamp.org/@backus/100783135920228207 …)pic.twitter.com/t5wXjnc7wg

Probably, although as far as I can tell I think we'd find that species incredibly annoying

I think I’m found to be incredibly brash and find most of the geniuses I surround myself with to be intellectually illegible. As long as these super humans have some super babes amongst them, I’m into it.

What does “empathy scales with numbers” mean? 🤨

A classic example is people donating more after seeing a pic of one starving kid vs learning there are millions of children starving. We weren't built to process suffering at the scale of millions of people. This might heavily distort how we donate. Check out effective altruismpic.twitter.com/9jX0VtjcJF

People are more likely to expend money and effort solving problems seen as managable. 1 starving little girl is a manageable problem. Millions makes it unmanageable. This triggers apathy to prevent expending excess resources one cannot afford to save all the children.

I think variance we see across groups on these dynamics, might make you wonder if we are so far from this right now...
