I imagine people will object on aesthetic grounds (“don’t ruin my community with money”) and incentive grounds (replacing intrinsic motivation with extrinsic doesn’t work). It clearly worked for YouTube though. I bet it could have interesting results on other platforms too!

Maybe content producer economies should exist (Reddit, Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram, StackOverflow) and without them we see weak substitutes: • In public: Hawking your Patreon • In private: Selling your soul by the minute on Fiverr Rest runs on the fumes of social capital

Twitch is an even better reference point for this.

Yeah I had them in mind too. I don't know Twitch well, but the money that content creators make is coming directly from viewers, right?

Seems to me that most of these networks have even longer/slimmer perceived value tails than YT. As a ~20K SO author, I doubt I’ve produced more than ~$1K realizable value, across hundreds of hours invested. But maybe that’s the harshest market among the ones you mentioned.

Yeah, SO was the biggest stretch (I cut out FB group admins for character limit). They don’t all have to be careers for Americans though. Who knows what quality will still emerge at different dollar amounts. Also, YouTube’s payouts surprised me when I first heard em. Never know

Sure. I’ve been reading a lot of Jaron Lanier lately, so the notion of more souls equalling proportionately more value is dubious, but that might need correction, per se.

Don't a lot of big Youtuber's at this point make a large % (often a majority) of their income from Patreon, merch, creator-placed ads, and stream donations? Youtuber's pure adsense days were numbered.
