The problem w/ suppressed innovation is that people don’t know what they’re missing out on. Twitter freezing everyone out of their API is an interesting exception we can learn from. Favstar and Tweetbot enhanced Twitter for me. Twitter choked off that value in the last year.

I’d love to hear the thinking that went into Twitter’s API freeze out strategy. Seems like the calculation was something like “how to we recapture engagement to collect more data and serve ads while also minimizing risk of being branded as monopolists?”

I write tiny Twitter scripts all the time for fun (recently: “what does a timeline containing only people who regularly respond to @dril look like?”).
Twitter’s API feels like a prank. Everything but the good stuff. Literally can’t say “give me the replies to this tweet”
