I think the Peter Thiel joke still holds: why are they called Uber? What do they think they're above? Is it the law, perhaps?

They do seem to be above taxi specific law, lol

If they didn’t have the money, they’d have been shut down long ago. The same way Pirate Bay would have beaten Hollywood if they had billions in the bank. Civil lawsuits are notoriously slanted towards the party with more money.

idk about The Pirate Bay vs Hollywood but agree otherwise. I'm reading up on Uber b/c it's interesting to compare to decentralized legal boundary pushing like p2p & prediction mrkts. Compared to Uber, may cost less to push boundaries w/ decentralized techhttps://twitter.com/backus/status/1030886690338951168 …

Some taxi drivers I speak to can't fathom how they have to pay an extra $6,000 or more a year in insurance and fees vs an Uber driver. It is definitely not a level playing field.

It's basically just a massive power struggle with Uber using their $21,712,450,000 in funding to try to overtake the market.https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/uber#section-locked-marketplace …

It didn't work two weeks ago in Spain. The taxis came out in full force and just shut whole cities down. Now Uber gets 1 license for ever 30 taxi licenses.https://twitter.com/eoghangilmartin/status/1023934811252162560?s=21 …
