was thinking about this the other day in the context of skyhooks and cranes. if you rip out (undermine) the foundation and the thing still stands and you find yourself rebuilding the foundation “below”, one wonders where the load-bearing is really happening

Initial position was a lazy one of perceptual bias. You then began exploring the terrain of intelligent arguments, and were surprised by what you found, which dislodged you from your initial position. Once familiar with the entire terrain, your opinions settled again, informed

I think we all do this. We generate opinions on the fly as required based on mental models / perceptual biases / perceived social cost. We rarely if ever interrogate them. We usually only do when the opinion collides with reality in a surprising manner, and piques our interest.
