Is there a phrase for holding one opinion for a while, going through what feels an "enlightened" phase where that opinion changes, only to then revert back to the starting opinion later on for different reasons? I feel like I do this a lot. Not sure how to feel about it

In my case this is post dissonance. I also try hard to leave dissonance alone when I notice it, but that’s another conversation

I flip flop a lot too, and the answer usually just becomes, "I don't know," which most people can't admit.

was thinking about this the other day in the context of skyhooks and cranes. if you rip out (undermine) the foundation and the thing still stands and you find yourself rebuilding the foundation “below”, one wonders where the load-bearing is really happening

It’s good to recognise this happens in yourself, and understand when your opinion is borderline, then encouraging others to listen to the evidence carefully rather than yours being right

Initial position was a lazy one of perceptual bias. You then began exploring the terrain of intelligent arguments, and were surprised by what you found, which dislodged you from your initial position. Once familiar with the entire terrain, your opinions settled again, informed

I think we all do this. We generate opinions on the fly as required based on mental models / perceptual biases / perceived social cost. We rarely if ever interrogate them. We usually only do when the opinion collides with reality in a surprising manner, and piques our interest.
