@backus this thread on HN prompted me to think about YouTube's demonetization "crisis" and how it's affected content creators https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17577372 …
...and how that relates to some of what you've been discussing re: decentralization

I think we haven't seen a jump to decentralized YouTube not just because of network effects and brand equity already being in place, but because on the internet demand matters so much more than supply (c.f. https://stratechery.com/2015/aggregation-theory/ …) YouTubers will endure a LOT to keep the audience

So my thesis + prediction is that on the internet, any jump to a decentralized system has to be user-led, not maker- or creator-led. Obviously platform / protocol creators have to be present, but the people who supply content professionally will follow the users, not vice versa

Interesting. Is the crisis just that people's videos get algorithmically demonetized and there is no recourse?

Yes and often for spurious reasons. Once the demonetization is overturned by humans, if that ever even happens, the majority of viewers have already watched

Yeah, I wouldn't expect this to do much for PeerTube. I agree switching platforms must be user-led, but it is usually subgroups exiting while the rest of the user base is unchanged. See alt-right (I think?) fleeing to voat. Wherever r/DarknetMarkets went is prob interesting too

Just looked into what happened to r/DarknetMarkets after reddit shut them down. A Tor hidden service clone of reddit with its own DarknetMarkets subreddit. Incrediblepic.twitter.com/gcAezt6qh7

Minimal decentralization necessary to give people what they want :)pic.twitter.com/phGjOZmu3A
