I've seen our project being bandwidth limited on in distrubuting docker layers for incremental CI builds. And we where exploring a similar solution ;) Eventually we could squeeze out enough speed via some random hacks, but I'm super certain we have to get back to P2P.

And the project I'm on is super small compared to FB/Twitter, still its evidence the overall idea is applicable not only at their level.

maybe I should some day code up a download mesh implementation—client and server—to be usable in a data center with even less overhead than bittorrent. Note that the efficiency of this is likely mostly due to splitting up the files.
