n=262. 13 people know someone whose internet was shut off by their ISP, 249 don't. From what I can tell reading online, I'd bet this was probably between 12 hours and a week too. More likely >5 years ago than in the last 5 years, I think Bizarrehttps://twitter.com/backus/status/1019711123614982144 …

And there's a bias to who answered your poll. I almost didn't because I thought, "No, I don't know anyone."

Wait why wouldn't that obviously be the "no" answer? Also yeah I don't take these polls super seriously, just trying to see if numbers are as extreme as I expect

It's totally the "no" answer. I mean that I felt like the poll didn't apply to me because I didn't know anyone. Maybe I was treating the poll like a checkbox: only act if you want the YES answer. I'm not saying it's rational, only telling you what went through my head.

Put another way: It took mental energy to answer your poll. I thought, "A NO answer is boring, but I should do it for science." Had I known someone, it would have been hard to resist answering the poll!

I'm guessing maybe 20% of people I know even know about pirating. (The denominator includes my mom, etc.) A fraction of that actually do it (so maybe 5% of total). A fraction of that get caught and punished. So yeah 5% seems crazy high.

Also, ISPs have made it very clear that they will do the bare minimum the law allows when it comes to enforcing anti-piracy, which makes 5% seem even more ridiculous
