Took a megadose of social media. Here is my erowid experience report: • Decent dopamine spike for first ~5hr of 10+ notifications/sec • Tolerance to notifications builds quickly. Had to mute for a few days • Bizarre seeing same 5-6 comments 50 times each, all from diff peoplehttps://twitter.com/backus/status/1015820990696194049 …

... wow. Ben Affleck perfectly predicting Spotify and Netflix in a random 2003 interview Almost exactly right about the unit economics of annual music subscriptions and the timing of online movie streaming. Solid point too on how shareware (Napster) is a necessary predecessor pic.twitter.com/mpEgRPK4zL

Trippy side effects: • Impressed how quickly/early sites pumped out articles. Several strange 100% autogenerated YT vids too. Weird peak into an industry • Felt clear people knew how they wanted to react. Opinion on Affleck, joke, nitpick, "I could have done that", etc

While I felt a bit tired of everyone's reactions after 3 days of notifications, it was refreshing that 95% of the reactions were positive. Most people were just excited and thought Ben's prediction was cool, I think. Small minority of negative reactions

Dopamine spike of 5 hours is short given it was high activity for ~3.5 days. May have lasted longer if it had gone viral within my usual circles or was content I produced. I found it and shared it because of the file sharing part, but it went viral because of the celebrity aspect

Reminds me of this tweet from Robin. I found it pretty funny at the time. A bit funnier nowhttps://twitter.com/robinhanson/status/977456182557331456 …

Really twitter, really? My most popular tweet ever is from my reposting an 8 year old graphic that was widely reported at the time? None of my deep original insights over the years merit remotely as much attention? I question your collective judgment. :P

Heh I mean if someone wanted to force it, I'd legit recommend finding celebrity facts that overlap with some separate interest like tech. Not the same, but only other time I did this really also was well receivedhttps://twitter.com/backus/status/1014034580473434117 …

Soulja Boy on how he got his name out there using Limewire: > I would look at the billboard charts ... and I would upload [my song] to Limewire and title it "50 Cent - In da club", "Britney Spears", "Eminem", etc

I like how this is good advice re shamelessly gaming the content algorithm but it also concerns someone else gaming the content algorithm

haha. I ran into this theme twice for diff reasons. Soulja boy, I was trying to find examples of careers built by understanding p2p trends early. Affleck, I was digging around @internetarchive for news clips b/c I want to understand the collective feeling about p2p at the time

There's definitely an allure to people who were especially prescient. Personally I like this stuff because I hope I can tease out some insight that will let me do the same thing.
