So is that the result of the device/portability of MP3s, or iTunes? I distinctly remembering buying way more CDs after being able to sample on Napster and Kazaa. I also remember Apple ads including "Don't steal music" in fine print.

The ability to take your music with you meant that mp3s were no longer an inferior good. You could burn mp3 CDs before, but it is still a lot of work.

I worked at Best Buy in the computer department right before iPod was released, and all of the guys there were so excited about the latest mp3 players getting released. We were the early adopters of digital music. And the iPod changed everything. (Damn you Apple marketing!)
