BitTorrent is far from a success story. Usage is constantly on the decline. Perhaps proves that Bitcoin can’t be shut down but also shows the power of government enforcement and tech centralization.

Usage decline may have more to do with easier-to-use alternatives like Netflix and Spotify.

BitTorrent's usage is obscured by VPN adoption. Note
@torrentfreak's top posts. Apps like@popcorntimetv also encourage VPNs p2p/BitTorrent are a big reason why we have streaming/subscription models. Success of BitTorrent, not a failure.pic.twitter.com/g4Jypi7B30

BitTorrent's long lasting success actually proves how resilient decentralized protocols can be. See this thread I just shared on how BitTorrent is a prime example of how courts aren't really built to handle decentralization:https://twitter.com/backus/status/1012544241707335680 …

Last, remember that BitTorrent and other p2p systems were developed before we knew how to add byzantine fault tolerant incentive systems. BitTorrent was very successful, but IMO it could be 10x better with a in-network tokenhttps://medium.com/@jbackus/what-if-bittorrent-had-a-token-13d62a590aa7 …
