People are saying social capital, well okay. I will say providing value to others that is useful. Its not that they were providing non valuable goods like undeveloped land. People could use the software. Not everyone received status prestige. People like to be of value to others.

Yeah I think there is a lot of truth in this point. In "How Music got Free", the scene member the author follows tried to leave a few times. The question "who am I if I'm not in the scene?" seems to point more to impact than to social capital. Better a leaker than a corporate cog
