Disruption of the music industry came in three parts: the mp3, Napster, and the mp3 player. Revenue didn't start plummeting until all three pieces of the puzzle fit together.pic.twitter.com/gXLnh0U2Sv

As a graph. For context, Napster launched in 1999 and the iPod came out October 2001.pic.twitter.com/5uiUPRIFOS

I think that is slightly off - when MP3s first hit the market, they were inferior to what we have now. Algorithms were less developed (no AAC or OGG), generally only 128kbps. The MP3 player is a driver for demand, but the iPod brought capacity. The MP3s could be higher bitrate.

No one said they’re the best. AAC improved on MP3 because it was the same team, but mp3 became a cultural thing the others didn’t really. The three keys for disruption here are about transmission (mp3), coordination (Napster), consumption (iPod). Not pure quality

The three waves appear to be 1) groundbreaking tech goes from 0 to 1 (mp3) 2) user interface dimension goes from 0 to 1 (Napster) 3) user experience dimension goes from 0 to 1 (iPod) Even simpler: possible -> available -> useable

lol. The parallels between p2p file sharing and blockchain tend to be either eye opening or a complete mirage. Hard to tell which sometimes
