I think that is slightly off - when MP3s first hit the market, they were inferior to what we have now. Algorithms were less developed (no AAC or OGG), generally only 128kbps. The MP3 player is a driver for demand, but the iPod brought capacity. The MP3s could be higher bitrate.
No one said they’re the best. AAC improved on MP3 because it was the same team, but mp3 became a cultural thing the others didn’t really. The three keys for disruption here are about transmission (mp3), coordination (Napster), consumption (iPod). Not pure quality
