File sharing didn't go away. BitTorrent is still very popular as a medium (and not just for piracy) and torrent websites like OiNK and http://what.cd have been called the best collections of music humans have ever created. PopcornTime is in a similar boat IMO

Thanks for gr8 thread but don’t agree with this point. I think most people want to pay for media (music, movies, tv) but for so long the legal digital alternatives sucked. Spotify and Netflix go some distance in addressing that (but not far enough imo) and are thusly successful.
