If you missed it earlier, I just finished a transcript of my chat (66 min) with on: investing in tooling with preset-modules, complexities of compilers, and lessons learned to take forward with preset-env. Some fun gems in here!

Henry Zhu: Right! So like if say Babel outputted something that was a bit bigger, and you were able to fix that for everyone, then that’s a huge size win. I guess your goal is to reduce the code size for all websites.

Jason Miller: You know, if I had a personal mantra, it would be to make the web smaller.

We just released Babel 7.7.6! 🐠 In 7.7.5 we fixed a bug which made it impossible to use native ES modules with @babel/runtime (thanks 😄). We had to temporarily revert it because it caused bugs in AMD builds. Don't worry: they will be supported again in v7.8.0!

PSA: Optional chaining stage 4! This means that... it should be enabled by default in @babel/preset-env and in @babel/parser 🎉🎉 I have created two issues to track it. If you want to help, please leave a comment there!

ECMAScript excitement 😉 PRs to Babel now run against test262 - the official JS conformance test suite. This raises quality and helps ensure users can migrate from transpiled to native feature usage smoothly. Congrats to

Wrote up a tracking issue if you have ideas since we added test262 to CI! 🌐 UI to see failing tests + determine priority 📊 Find out discrepancies b/t browsers and make fixes for preset-modules 📄 Better document loose/spec behavior via tests
