The explicitly stated motives for the 9/11 attacks were the presence of US troops in Saudi Arabia (home to many of Islam’s holiest sites), support for Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestine, and the murderous sanctions against Iraq. US policies resulted in the 9/11 attacks.

9/11 has become more myth than fact and was exploited at the time to accomplish all the goals set out in the 1992 Wolfowitz Doctrine, a plan for US post-Cold War hegemony (namely unilateral preemptive strikes) that was scandalous when leaked in ‘92 but became policy in 2001.

The deaths of those 3,000 Americans have been cynically exploited for 18 years to justify the same policies that led to the attacks to begin with. Today we should remember all victims of US imperialism and resolve to see its dismantling in our lifetimes.
