Imagine how much we could accomplish if we didn't spend so much time trying to get grants and sell ourselves. Imagine what we could do if dedicated research scientist positions were a thing: like postdocs but continuing positions that you could build a career and a life on.

Researchers are seeking to learn more about the diversity of pain. We need laws and flexible guidelines that reflect the needs of the individual vs. rigid rules based on data "averages". People are not averages...

This seriously undermines the long-term sustainability of the STEM sector going forward. I'm surprised and not surprised to see these sentiments echoed so accurately in the report. Our own submission can be found here (2/2)

The pressures are felt keenly here in Australia too. Last year we teamed up with and made a submission to the Productivity Commission, highlighting that the current academic culture fosters an unhealthy mental landscape for EMCRs in the STEM sector (1/2)

Researchers are putting together biological and psychological pieces of a pain puzzle that holds promise for targeted treatments that are tailored to specific types of pain, individual brain biology and even different personalities.

Beautiful new work on "social homeostasis:" Much like a thermostat monitors temperature and adjusts, animals monitor how much social contact they have, and loneliness drives them to seek out more. (1/2)

Every field in health & medical research complains about under-funding, but given I want to mention environmental epidemiology. Here are some of my rejected grant titles (ARC/NHMRC), and I and others have recently left the field because we couldn't win funding.

As a public health researcher focused on mental health and pain I'm pleased there is a "million minds" mission, but the scope of research/eligible candidates is so restrictive that I'm not convinced it will help address the Australian burden of mental health conditions

A student of mine did a study (published in ) showing that kids rarely fake pain & when they do they are terrible at it. However, kids were extraordinarily skilled at hiding their pain (which they often suppressed to protect their parents)
