Taking somebody's life is inherently more authoritarian than imprisoning them. In one, you permanently remove the capacity for someone to ever be free, in the other, you temporarily remove someone's freedom. Please do not try to make the inverse argument.

That was a bit of a confused response, but I think the point's a bit clear - systems are not static entities and power dynamics can shift in a heartbeat, so even on that analysis, no, it's just a false get-out clause.
