All work under capitalism is coercive. Your vanilla job is coercive. My sex work job is coercive. But they are equally so. (I’m not talking about sex trafficking and will not be, as it’s a separate issue.)

Is the sex industry unsafe? Yes. Why is it unsafe? Because of capitalist patriarchy. (This is an over-simplification of course.)

Under capitalism, sex work is absolutely exploitative. It would be safe to say even that it is more exploitative, because a lot of sex workers heavily marginalized people doing a marginalized profession.

But is sex work INHERENTLY exploitative? As in, exploitative in the absence of capitalism, patriarchy, racism, etc? We would first have to define sex work, and define it separately from capitalism. As in, what do sex workers DO, besides SELL sex?

What do sex workers CREATE? This varies, of course, because there are so many different types of sex work, but besides the obvious, sex workers provide human intimacy. This human intimacy is not necessarily sexual. Sex workers create an experience of human intimacy/relationship.

Sex work is something that can exist beyond selling sex, beyond trading sex for things. Sex work can exist independently of capitalism as it is not intrinsically linked to capitalism.

So, at its core, sex workers create an experience of human intimacy for those that seek their services. By itself, this is not exploitative. So, then, could sex work ethically exist under socialism and communism? Yes.

Money does not exist under communism though. Sex work couldn't exist under communism because work couldn't exist under communism.
