I believe there's a logic embedded within the social fabric which necessitates consumption of animal products as symbolic to the order.

The consumption of animal products is not nutritive but rather is a brutal display of power over the other as animal, establishing social cohesion through domination via the continuous threat of violence and death to the outsider and outcast signified thereby.

The differentiation of "man" and "animal" justifies of the idea of humanity which defines the subhuman outside its moral stricture. The criminal is the animal and the animal is to be put to death. Yet we are all criminals in potentia.
