Capitalism doesn't establish these phenomena, but the idea that it's merely "for ourselves" seems to overlook that it's not merely for the self but for the self in relation to the other. This is why there tend to be certain trends and standards in fashion.
That doesn't make sense. We can't see our own faces. We can only ever see a reflection or photographs. Wearing makeup and dressing well most certainly is to make an impression on others and capitalism definitely exploits this fact.
