Neither hetero nor homo imply that there are only two genders; they do imply attraction to either same or different gendered individuals.
It's not the specific genders which matter to conceptualization of sexual orientation but the relation between identity and difference.

Hetero means an orientation towards other, whereas homo means orientation towards same. Bi implies orientation towards both other and same.
