News flash.
Being opposed to unbridled capitalism
doesn't make you a socialist or a 'progressive'.
This isn't a binary world.

But if there's enough space on this planet for everyone to live comfortably, and there is, and enough resources for people to stay healthy and fed, which there are, then socialism is not impossible.

"pure" socialism.
-
Pure socialism is just communism and should be the inevitable result of a total international socialist revolution. The transition from "to each according to their contribution" to "to each according to their needs" emerges from the dissolution of class.
-
It's never going to work as long as there's one living capitalist, right?
-
That's sort of implied, yes.

To say that socialism is impossible because there's not enough resources to meet everyone's needs, or "equal external welfare" is absolutely false.
-
There is enough (potentially) for everyone to have what they absolutely need to have a decent life. There's not enough for everyone to have everything they *want*. That's immpossible.
-
To what extent are desires manufactured? Does the child who is mesmerized by advertising designed to generate a sense of necessity for the product advertised really actually want the stupid plastic toy?
-
Sure, that's a factor. But modern capitalism didn't invent, envy, jealousy or even greed. It's an effect not a cause. It's true that human misery is exacerbated by structural injustice but the cause is spiritual in origin. Socialism treats the symptoms not the disease.
-
Before capitalism there was still class division. Negative emotions and desires usually result from material lack and unfulfilled needs. Jealousy/envy/greed are feelings that don't usually occur in isolation but along with other feelings such as insecurity and loneliness.
-
Trust me, there are plenty of negative emotions to go around among/between people who are very well fed and lack for nothing. Perhaps more since the have more time on their hands. There's a hierarchy of needs. Food/shelter are just the beginning. Meaning/purpose come next.
-
Negative emotions don't arise from nowhere. If one truly lacks for nothing, then there can be no cause for negative emotions. Conflict may be inevitable, but the point is to mediate through cooperative compassion. Needs aren't quite hierarchical: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fundamental_human_needs?wprov=sfla1 …
-
Negative emotions indeed don't arise from nowhere, they arise from a glitch in the historic development of the human race. The prime cause is not economic. If your theory was correct the very rich would be the most positive folks around. Nothing could be further from the truth.
