An ominous replacement for "You have nothing to lose but your chains" by the identitarian left: "you will begin to understand how much you benefit". https://twitter.com/meansleep/status/1057992688124002304 …
I don't think that's what is meant by reparations in this context. It's not about shifting power from one group to another, but about acknowledging history and taking steps to heal the very real trauma of those who have lived under extreme oppression.

And I don't think it's really that much to ask to actually care about the wellbeing of other people. If you don't, why even call yourself a socialist?
-
There's being a socialist, and then there is being expected to take responsibility for other people's interests and ideological goals. I find the paternalistic-esque fetish of viewing the Global South as unable to heal without "reparations" or "aid" from outside to be insulting.
-
This totally ignores the material reality of the Global South. Impoverishment doesn't come out of nowhere. If we don't acknowledge the trauma that's been inflicted and give back what's been taken, how can we call ourselves socialists in any serious measure?
-
We owe so much of our own development to these people. We've been living off of them and living fairly comfortably because of it. We're all complicit in this system so it's not unreasonable to ask that we give back.
-
You first. If you feel some sort of responsibility for other people's impoverishment then go do something about it rather than lecturing us.
-
I will.
