The fact that some Socialists believe in rewarding merit is frankly appalling. Like. You're missing the point. All deserve a fulfilling life. Labor should be fulfilling and society should provide for needs. Also objective merit is a capitalist myth

Rewarding merit (of labour) is necessary in the transitional phase towards communism. Otherwise the unproductive exploit the productive, which is basically what capitalism is. It shouldn't be an end in itself but a means.pic.twitter.com/IkMGXzCZrp

This assumes so much. Namely that the unproductive are just lazy and not unable to do the same amount of labor. That isn't exploitation, it's society. Providing when others cannot, filling in the gaps. Not to mention, again, merit of labor is subjective

Except the merit of labour isn't subjective. Marx proved this long ago. If the merit of labour is subjective then how is it that the working class is exploited? Also, the difference between those who can't work and those who won't is something society should be able to gauge.
