Why would gender determinism necessarily be transphobic? I mean, I don't agree with determinism, I'm just interested in how determinism leads to transphobia. I remember seeing biological determinism being used as an argument to support transgender rights.

because until we have perfect flawless understanding of exactly how the human brain works in every way, determinism will involve enforcement of the restrictive and repressive status quo

I don't understand that reasoning. Couner: Science demonstrates that gender is developed in the brain and is genetically determined, i.e. some people are born "in the wrong body." Therefore, we cannot be against transgender identity on the grounds that it is "against nature."

Wasn't this the mainstream argument in support of both sexual and gender identity for a while? With the narrative of the secular scientific liberal fighting for LGBT rights against the religious Christian conservatives claiming LGBT to be mental illness, perversion, and sin?

things are more complex. we're fighting a war on multiple fronts: conservatives, who care as much about trans brains as they did about 'the gay gene', and TERFs, who swap between biological and sociological arguments as and when it benefits them

That makes sense. Things have changed... I suppose I can see why certain arguments would fall out of favour. Although aside from biological determinism not carrying much weight, it's still difficult for me to understand how determinism is used in support of transphobia.

The notion of immutability undermines our bodily autonomy, particularly as a factor in the research that influences our treatment access, ie it feeds into medical gatekeeping, which is transphobic.
